Course requirements: Students should already play chromatic harmonica and be interested in expanding their knowledge to embrace jazz and the art of improvisation in the jazz idiom. The ability to read music is useful but not essential.
SUBJECTS:
Tone building: How to build an expressive and individual sound
Musical examples: OKO will bring music so that people can listen to different styles of music by chromatic harp players and improvisers
Harmony: Learning how and why chords are named, construction of chords, ways to improvise a line through chord changes (guide-tones, voice leading...)
Ear training: Introduction to ear training, recognition of intervals and harmonic colors
Improvisation exercises: OKO will demonstrate exercises, accompany students on piano and talk about harmonic considerations.
Rhythm: Possibly the most important topic. Rhythmic aspects of phrasing, other rythmic considerations.
Repertoire: What is the minimum repertoire you need to play jazz?
Sightreading: OKO wll bring some material to read, to demonstrate the advantages of being able to decipher new music on the spot
Fixing the instrument: Minor repairs and useful adjustments
